Time to the next Major Arcana Council: 68 hours, 45 minutes, 39 seconds…

Three days, just as Judgment had said.

“Let’s go, Sir Alex. You’ll eat in the refectory and then warm up with our men. We can’t afford a day without training. We’ll find you an axe, too. You’re used to swinging one, aren’t you? I’ve seen you swing your sword like you’re chopping down mammoths, ha!”

More like chopping firewood in my granny’s village, Alex thought.

They left the sleeping chamber. As the knight led Alex through numerous corridors, he reflected on the recent Arcana Council: the fearsome Devil who could also be in Beastland; the farms mining techniques; the Star and the agreement on the exchange. At his last thought, Alex stumbled over a protruding stone.

“Sir Ogner, I must see the Lord,” Alex said firmly. “See him immediately. It’s a matter of life and death.”

The unknown lady’s condition was uncertain. Time might have been of the essence. If Alex had decided to help her, he couldn’t afford to fail.

“Lord Rodrik is in a meeting with the Marshal and the stewards,” Ogner replied seriously. “But I’ll make sure the Lord tries to meet you as soon as he can.”

“Thank you,” Alex nodded.

In the refectory, Ogner ordered the servants to feed their distinguished guest, then went to see the Lord. Alex was immediately seated at a small table with a steaming bowl of pearl barley porridge in front of him. Next to it, delicate, tender hands placed another bowl of juicy slices of crisply fried meat. The hall was filled with fantastic aromas, and the scents hung in the air like a thick, smoky haze. Beyond the doors, in the kitchen, stoves burned, cauldrons bubbled, and the white aprons of rotund cooks flickered as they wielded large ladles and cast-iron pans.

Alex dug into the food immediately. He tried to eat carefully, but the succulent meat still splashed his shirt with its aromatic juices. His jaws quickly tamed the delicious slices, but the young maids kept circling around him, carefully placing new tasty pieces on his plate, filling his mug with cider, and bringing golden-crusted pies...

Finally, he felt heavy and completely satisfied. After thanking the rosy-cheeked girls profusely, Alex stood up from the table and, taking a deep breath, made his way through the corridor to the courtyard. After the aromas of the refectory, he needed some fresh air.

Alex surveyed the fortress. Inside the walls were stables, barns, smithies, and several wells with iron gates. The castle’s tower, the keep from which Alex had emerged, was built of massive blocks of gray stone.

To the right, within the fenced area, squires and knights were training. One by one, they galloped on horseback and threw spears at a shielded dummy. After that, the dummy would spin and its second arm would swing at the rider. Some couldn’t avoid it and fell from their saddles with a crash.

“Sir Alex, have you finally decided to wake up?” Enessen, standing by the fence, said in a politely insulting tone as he inspected Alex’s shirt.
